Social Media & Globalisation - The impact


Social media app - How often do I use it? - Why do I use it? 

Twitter -  Daily, I Mainly used in the afternoon when I get home - I use the app as a form of interaction with people I know online as well as for politics. 

Youtube - Consistently use it in the morning till afternoon everyday. - I use the app because I want to do something in my free time when I'm bored so it provides content. 

Twitch - Maybe 2-3 hours in the afternoon - I use it to interact with communities and streamers I enjoy. 

Web 1.0 - 1990-2000

The 'web' was. initially developed in 1991 by Sir Tim Berners-Lee

It was originally an information space, wherein consumers could access information.

It was fairly static, though hypertext (I.E. Text that could be linked was in development) 

Web 2.0 - 2000 - 2010 

A term coined by Tim O'Reilly and Dale Dougherty in 2004

Essentially it is the theory that websites increasingly offered the potential for audience participation and collaboration 

In 2004, David Gauntlett suggested that traditional models of media 'gatekeeping' (mediated to the 'little people' by 'media gods') were gradually being eroded, and consumers were given a voice through enhances web technologies, becoming prosumers

Gatekeeping - a traditional method whereby large companies or creators would provide content to consumers and they would be unable to respond to it or make their own content. 

Web 2.0 allows users to interact and collaborate with each other through social media. (becomes prosumers / creators) 

Mobile phones enhance social connections that have always existed: gossip, making arrangements etc. 

Web 3.0 - 2010 - 2020 

The so-called 'semantic web'. Web 3.0 was a term first used by John Markoff in 2006. 

The semantic web is the process of allowing machines to understand the meaning of hyperlinked information to personalise content to audiences. 

Effectively, the web becomes 'intelligent' - it tracks your preferences and habits. In a commercial sense, personalised advertisements can reach you. 

Web 4.0 - 2020 - 2030 

The future of the web, 

Thousands of databases of personal information. 

Potential for intelligent avatar agents acting. For example, as shopping assistants for audiences.

Social Media Channels 

Social media is used by individual members of the public, media producers, celebrities, commercials, businesses, political activists, agencies and influencers. These are used to reach out to audiences. 

The channels are the different types of products used in order to do this. 

Prosumers - create media content (User generated content) - Non professionals creating content. 

Consumers - consume media content 

Social Media Channels  -  People who use it - Why he/she uses it 

Twitter - 10 Downing Street / parliament - Used to create awareness and be informative on current pandemic. As well as a large active audience. 

Youtube - MrBeast - To create unique content for everyone to enjoy / charity as well (prosumers and consumers) 

Twitch - Shroud - Entertainment for others / full-time career 

Instagram - Meme Pages - to create entertainment for others / awareness of the channel

Facebook - Typically older people - Updates on family
