Trolling / Cyber-Bullying

When an individual/company is persistently targeted in a negative way online, usually through social media channels.

The number of social media platforms available has led to a proliferation in this, as has the fact that users enjoy a degree of anonymity when posting via social media sites.

Case study: Ariana Grande

After she split with rapper boyfriend Mac Miller, and the latter died through a drug overdose. Grande was trolled online. As a result, she disabled her Instagram comments for a period of time.

Body Image, Connotations & Interpretations

What are some of the issues surrounding social media when it comes to body image?

People can judge you online for your body image IE Cyber bullying and this can make people hate themselves.

What impact has manipulation had?

Made people feel good about themselves.

Cat fishing is a thing online which can cause bad situations.

Made people have unrealistic body standards which can lead to health issues. IE people making their waist smaller.

Can you think of any real world examples?

Kardashians

Negative body image

Obsessing over the (e.g) Instagram posts of others can lead to feelings of negative self-worth - both from the lives influencers purport to lead (they only show the good stuff) and from the images themselves, many of which have had filters added or have been excessively photoshopped.

Some lenses on cameras, due to their size distort the shape and size of the nose, again leading to feelings of negativity regarding appearance.

Moral Panic - Public anxiety and / or alarm in response to something that is happening within society. It threatens the equilibrium within society.

Cohen's theory on the idea of moral panic relates to the negative impacts of social media that faces the younger generations. For example, the idea of influence from online posts such as images that have been edited with photoshop can lead to younger audiences wanting to look the same as that person. Stereotypically this is most common in young girls as we can see the influence they receive from celebrities such as Kim Kardashian. This moral panic leads to young girls trying to change how they look to become more like Kim Kardashian causing unrealistic body image and potential health problems.

However some peoples opinions is that influence from software such as Photoshop causing these unrealistic body image is actually not the issue. This is because people would eventually find a way to promote unrealistic body image therefore there isn't a reason to hate Photoshop.

The material shown here may not be safe for younger audiences due to the nudity shown.

The image has not been photoshopped but has had any filters added to change the colour.

This was shot by the back garden of their house by a car filled with water,  as well as is a full body shot.

The image shown here has been made appropriate for younger audiences. It does not show any sexualisation or anything illegal.

The image has a filter to change the colour scheme of the actual image.

This has been shot in a river in a forest with Romell standing in a trolley. There may be a vibrancy change to the colours but its hard to tell. Its also a whole body shot.

Backlashes Against Brands

Social media has enabled consumers to voice their own opinions on a range of issues.

These include big businesses, whose marketing and/ or products they object to.

An example of this is Kim Kardashian's recent 'kimono' line of underwear.

There was a backlash from Japanese people who said the clothing disrespects Japanese clothing, its considered the national dress for Japan. Its been around since the 15th century.

Japanese users of Social media used the hashtag #KimOhNo

One way in which brands receive negative comments is through memes.

A meme is an idea, behaviour or style that spreads via social networks from person to person and that usually involves a sarcastic or critical statement. This is known as parodying

With enough shares and likes, campaigning might go viral, attracting hundreds of thousands of responses.

In 2018, H&M Had to apologise for an advertisement which followed racist stereotypes showing a black boy wearing a 'coolest monkey in the jungle' hoodie. They received a lot of hate for this.

Decreased Productivity

Whiles many businesses use social networking sites to find and communicate with clients. The sites can also prove a great distraction to employees who may show more interest in what their friends are posting inline than in their work tasks. There is also the risk of individuals commenting about their place of work online which could lead to disciplinary action I the comments in any way bring he company into discipline

A false sense of communication

While Maslows hierarchy of needs can be applied to show why people use social media, such sites can show why people use social media such as sites make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful relationships we foster in the real world and the numerous casual relationships formed through social media. By focusing so much time and psychic energy on what might be called less meaningful relationships, users may become less able to forge successful relationships in real life, at work or socially.

Loss of privacy

Social networking sites encourage people to be more public about their personal lives. While most sites allow their users to control who sees the things they have posted. Such limitations are often forgotten, can be difficult to control or do not work as well as advertised. For example, potential employers can look you up in an instant and access material that may not be favourable.

Cultural Imperialism

One criticism of globalisation is that it leads to imperialism - that is, the way in which predominantly Western popular culture is promoted to less developed countries. This may in turn, lead to the gradual erosion of those less developed countries

Disney is seen as an example of this.
